Schmaltz, Hamilton elected to Rugby school board
Two Rugby School Board seats were filled by write-in, and district voters also overwhelmingly approved the publication of board proceedings in the official county newspaper during school elections held on June 9.
The election witnessed an unusually high voter turnout, as 110 ballots were cast.
Susie Schmaltz was the top write-in vote-getter in Precinct No. 2, which represents the southwestern part of the district. Schmaltz received 36 votes to 27 for Pete Burgard. Current board member Nicholas Schmaltz, who decided not to seek a fourth term, received six write-in votes, and single write-in votes were cast for other residents of that precinct.
Mark Hamilton received 97 write-in votes in Precinct No. 4 (city of Rugby). Rob Bollinger received three; Jayme Berube, two; and single write-in votes were cast for a few other residents.
Current board member Alecia Pretzer chose not to run for re-election. The terms cover three years. Schmaltz and Hamilton said they will serve on the board, adding it’s an opportunity to serve the community in this important position and learn more about the inner workings of a school district. Their terms will begin in July.
District voters also voted 105 to 3 to publish the school board proceedings in the Pierce County Tribune.
The Rugby School Board canvassed and declared the election results at its evening meeting on June 9.
