HACTC prisoner injured during transfer
A male Heart of America Correctional and Treatment Center prisoner was severely injured on Aug. 7 after jumping out of a moving transfer van near Garrison en route to the Burleigh County Detention Center.
According to a press release by HACTC, the prisoner jumped out of the vehicle in an apparent suicide attempt.
HACTC administrator Mary Richard said the prisoner had his ankles shackled and was handcuffed, and authorities are still investigating how he got out of the moving Ford passenger van.
Richard would not release the name of the prisoner or the extent of his injuries, but the release said he was hospitalized.
The man was being transferred on to Burleigh County to face an outstanding warrant on misdemeanor charges after he was picked up in Rugby.
Richard said there were two HACTC staff members in the vehicle when the incident occurred.
The incident is being investigated by the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
