Star Pupils at Region Music

Several Rugby High School band (pictured) and choir students recently competed at regional music festivals. Members from each will compete at the State Class B Music Contest today in Minot.

Twenty-seven students from the Rugby high school band competed at the regional instrumental contest held at the Langdon High School on April 15, 2016. Each entry at contest receives a rating of star, I-excellent, II good, or III fair. The competition is set up so that only twenty percent of the entries could receive a star and compete at state. Rugby had twenty four entries compete at Langdon and twelve of them received a star and will be competing at the Class B State Music Contest on Saturday, May 7, 2016:

– Karin Selland flute solo

– Kaitlyn Boucher flute solo and trumpet solo

– Maria Mack oboe solo, also received an outstanding performance award at the regional contest

– Lauren Kraft clarinet solo

– Hunter Hager tenor saxophone solo

– Elizabeth Skjelver French horn solo

– Anders Johnson trombone solo

– Kyle Lashman tuba solo

– Kade Leier timpani solo

– Karin Selland, Jacquelyn Blessum, Maria Blessum, and Rylee Kuntz flute quartet

– Lauren Kraft, Allyson Kleespie, Madalyn Pretzer, and Emily Salwey clarinet quartet

The remaining twelve solos and ensembles received an excellent rating (the second highest rating):

– Allyson Kleespie clarinet solo

– Madalyn Pretzer clarinet solo

– Shea Heidlebaugh alto saxophone solo

– Preston Tryba alto saxophone solo

– Isaiah Johnson baritone saxophone solo

– Landen Foster trombone solo

– Spencer Alefteras tuba solo

– Jaden Munyer snare drum solo

– Shea Heidelbaugh, Preston Tryba, Madison Uhlenkamp, Hunter Hager, Dessa Denich, and Isaiah Johnson saxophone ensemble

– Dylan Grove and Mack Alefteras saxophone duet

– Anders Johnson and Landen Foster trombone duet

– Jaden Munyer, Kade Leier, Gabe Clements, Karsyn Hager, and Maria Mack percussion ensemble

Twenty-four students attended the Region IV vocal contest in Minnewaukan. Of the 24 students who participated, 12 students received a star rating and will perform at State Music.

The following ensembles that received a star at regional vocal contest:

– Candace Schlosser for her solo

– Maria Mack for her solo

– Alissa Volk for her solo

– Girl’s Trio which included Madalyn Pretzer, Elizabeth Skjelver and Alissa Volk

– Large Girls Ensemble

Both Schlosser and Volk also received outstanding performance of the day for their solos.
