Speech team receives awards

Capping off another season, members of the Rugby High School speech team received recognition and awards at a dinner and presentation May 4 in the high school commons area.

The award presentation started with the presentation of “legs”. Coach Kyle Vareberg explained the awarding of legs was for students who were top five placers in state-qualifying events. Those earning one leg included senior Kelsey Schmaltz (dramatic interpretation); juniors Jacob Berginski (humorous interpretation), Emily Stier (humorous duo) and Darby Deckert (humorous duo); freshman McKenzie Oppen (speech to inform); and eighth-graders Tristin Lunde (radio) and Madalyn Pretzer (humorous duo). Students receiving two legs were junior Zach Miller (humorous duo and speech to entertain) and eighth grader Alissa Volk (poetry and humorous duo). Junior ReeAnn Christianson was the only student to receive three legs (impromptu, dramatic interpretation and speech to inform).

The second set of awards presented were letters. Vareberg explained that the awarding of letters was based on a point system. Students received five points for doing an event, five points for finalizing in an event, and another five for being in the top three in an event. Berginski, Schmaltz, Oppen, Volk and freshman Thor Skjelver received duplicate letters. Miller, Wangler, Pretzer, Lunde and Maria Mack received their first letters.

The third set of awards honored those who placed at the state meet.

In between awards, two students gave speeches in front of their peers and parents. Wangler did a speech to persuade on “the bystander effect,” while Miller gave a speech to entertain on being the son of an English teacher.

Schmaltz was recognized for being a senior and for six years of competing.

After peer rewards, some based on peer votes and some based on inside jokes, the coach awards were presented. Deckert and Elizabeth Skjelver received the hardest worker awards. Christianson and Katelyn Boucher received the most valuable participant awards. Wangler and Pretzer received the most improved student awards. Wangler also received an award for best original oratory. Deckert and Christianson won the best duo award. Boucher won the best draw event award, and Volk won the best interpretative event award.
