The speech meet in Cando last week was a “downer”, Rugby High School speech coach Kyle Vareberg said Tuesday.

Three Rugby speech team members, Kelsey Schmaltz, Rebekah Wangler and Alissa Volk, were the only ones who placed in the top three in their respective events. In addition to those three, freshman Thor Skjelver, eighth-grader Kaitlyn Boucher and junior Darby Deckert were in the top five of their respective events.

With the regional speech meet in Harvey today, team members needed as much practice time as possible. And they got a practice session in front of a familiar audience Tuesday evening: their parents.

Meeting in the library before splitting up to go to different classrooms, parents were able to get an overview of some of the events their children compete in at speech, and what has to be done for an event. The parents were able to see pieces their children would take to the regional meet, some of which were new, some of which had been performed since the start of the season.
