Dollars for Scholars fundraiser tonight

By Staff | Mar 13, 2014

The Rugby Dollars for Scholars chapter has a huge event planned for tonight at the Rugby Eagles Club.

The organization’s annual auction starts at 5:30 p.m. with a social. A dinner by Grove’s Catering will be served at 6 p.m., and entertainment – groups from the Rugby High School speech team, band and choir – and prize drawings start at 7 p.m. The cost is $20 per person at the door.

Those who buy tickets are eligible to win one of $5,000 worth of prizes, including an iPad, Minnesota Twins tickets, a rifle, or even a grand prize of $1,000 cash.

The event is a fundraiser, one that the chapter puts on yearly.

Every year since 2003, when the chapter was formed, Dollars for Scholars has tried to raise scholarship funds for high school seniors. The chapter is also a member of Scholarship America, an organization that acquires scholarships. Not counting scholarships through Scholarship America, the chapter has given over $75,000 in scholarships since its inception. They ask businesses for $50 donations annually, in addition to putting on big fundraisers.

According to Paola Trottier, chapter member and teacher at Rugby High School, when a student applies for a scholarship online through Dollars for Scholars or Scholarship America, they are connected to various scholarships acquired by that organization based on need, location, grades or activities.

“Students can go apply online one time, and all the scholarships come to them rather you go out seeking scholarships,” Trottier said.

Trottier says the application process is extensive, and that the chapter is suggesting students start it earlier and keep their applications up to date.

“It’s not something you want to sit down and do in an afternoon,” Trottier said. “But in the end, if you do this once and just update it every year until you’re a senior, it’s easy.”
