Up-close with science and technology

By Staff | Dec 2, 2012

Four girls from Wolford School got a up close look at the GUESS science and technology program in Fargo on Nov. 16.

GUESS is an acronym for Girls Understanding and Exploring STEM Stuff. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

Eighth-grader Lynnsey Slaubaugh and freshmen Kencie Halvorson, Madison Marchus and Hannah Walsh participated in the trip.

The girls got a hands-on look at DNA technology when they had samples taken and were able to examine them.

They also checked out an electron microscope and listened to a lecture on medical technology.

All three students expressed an interest in a future career in science and technology.

Marchus was interested in the medical sciences and engineering, Halvorson said she may be interested in animal science in the future and Slaubaugh said she may consider a career in sports medicine.

“It was a great trip,” Halvorson said.

The girls were joined by students from Rolette and Hazen to form a small group so all of the participants would get hands-on experience.
