Making final preparations

By Staff | Mar 11, 2010

Rugby’s cheer team has just one more week to ready themselves for the NDCCA Winter Competition in Bismarck, so how well the next few practices go will be critical for the team’s chances for another title.

One thing Kari St. Michel, cheer advisor, doesn’t have to worry about, is the work ethic of her squad.

“They really put the time in,’ St. Michel said.

And that’s good since the Panthers’ two and a half minute routine is full of cheers, dance, stunts, tumbling and jumps.

“We really put a lot more stunting into this routine,’ St. Michel added.

In part because of the experience in junior Rachel Allickson as the squad’s “stunting flyer” who can soar quite high in the air.

The team has spent the better part of two weeks going over the routine to music which the members created. St. Michel along with Deanne Nelson, fellow cheer advisor, provide pointers along the way.

St. Michel added the help of Lynn Ostrem for gymnastic techniques with the tumbling and KZZJ radio’s Bruce Allen for professional cutting the music for the group’s routine is appreciated.

At the upcoming March 20 competition, teams are judged on their cheers, jumps, tumbling, stunts and dance, which must be in the routine, as well on their technique and choreography. In addition to the main competition, Rugby will also have take part in stunting and jump off events.

The team is mix of both members who have competed at state fall and winter competitions as well as a few first-timers St. Michel said.

Rugby has enjoyed much success at the NDCCA Winter Competition, winning several Class B titles. It placed third a year ago.
