An informal survey of Rugby students leaving the high school parking lot recently revealed that few are buckling up. That reality is why members of the Rugby Student Council are working with members of the local Safe Communities organization on a Click it Quick campaign.

The campaign kicked off last week with a DVD presentation to students as well as additional information about the Department of Transportation’s efforts to reduce teen vehicle crashes.

Click it Quick is a statewide contest open to high school students. Students receive points for taking on-line quizzes regarding driver safety; conducting school-based educational activities; community-based educational activities and creating a 30-second Click it Quick video.

The contest runs through March 2, 2010. The school with the highest average points per students will win a free concert at its school.

At last week’s kick off event, students were encouraged to visit the website www.ndteendrivers.com where they can register to take quizzes relating to driving and earn points for the school. Parents and community members are also encouraged to visit the website.

This coming week the school will be conducting activities which tie into the teen driver’s safety campaign.

A demolished car will be placed on the school grounds. Students who log on and take the safety quiz on the DOT website will receive a cookie handed out by the student council; and a lyceum “Be Amazed – Teen Amazed” will be conducted.

In the near future, other school and community events to increase awareness of seatbelt use and safe driving habits will be presented.

Members of the Click It Quick committee are: Alyssa Berginski, Brittany Fritel, Kelsey Leier, Kristin Migler, Kaitlin Blessum, Gabby Samuda, Lindsey Hamilton, Emily Voeller, Josh Stutrud and Jacey Shively. The group is working with Colleen Beckman, community member, to implement the campaign.
