Oktoberfest brings music and more to museum

Julie Lee, Fargo, plays a polka tune to visitors to the Prairie Village Museum’s Oktoberfest Sept. 24.
Lively polka music filled the air at Rugby’s Prairie Village Museum for Oktoberfest on Sept. 24.
Cars filled the museum’s parking lot, too, as more than 200 visitors turned out for the event, jointly held by the Heart of America Germans from Russia and the museum.
Prairie Village Museum Director Shane Engeland said he was pleased with the number of people who enjoyed the festivities.
German-Russian favorites such as kuchen, bratwurst, and knoephla soup, a North Dakota specialty, sold out quickly.
Henry’s 90-Wt. Barbecue and Ma’s Cook Car offered traditional American food for sale.
Other attractions included a beer garden at the museum’s saloon, axe throwing, a blacksmith display and children’s games.
At the Heart of America Germans from Russia Cultural Center, Vicki Hoffart encouraged locals who trace their roots to Germans from Russia to supply information from their family trees to add to the center’s collection of genealogical records.
