The Sunday School of Bethel church will have their Christmas tree and program today (Thursday) at 2:30 instead of 8 as previously announced. Miss Gladys Stewart is in charge.

Mrs. Keena’s doctor at Grand Forks said that his patient’s condition is such that he believes she is out of danger. In a telephone report to a doctor of the Johnson Clinic, he said Mrs. Keena apparently will be okay, but a minimal paralysis of the right leg persists and that he was considering having a Fargo specialist drive up for an examination of Mrs. Keena’s condition.

Mrs. Keena was accidently shot in the back Dec. 8 when a .20 gauge shotgun discharged in the back seat of the car in which she was riding. The charge went through the front seat and hit Mrs. Keena in the right portion of her back. Much of the shot entered her right lung, causing profuse internal bleeding.

Approximately $3 million in “first final deficiency payments” are being issued this week by the Pierce County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service office to participating farmers in Pierce County.

The payments are for wheat and barley producers and are being made through government Payment in Kind certificates. No checks are being issued, according to county ASCS Director Larry Kamrath.

The certificates arrived from the government last week, and the process of checking certificate amounts began immediately.

Processing of the certificates takes two to three days. Some certificates were scheduled for mailing last Friday, and more were to be out this Monday.

The payments represent the difference between the five month market price of wheat and barley and the target price set by the government. Payments do not exceed $1.53 per bushel, and many producers took 84 cents per bushel in advances when they signed up for the program. Early payments are deducted from the current certificate amounts.
