As the Tribune went to press last evening this section of the country was being drenched with a most timely and welcome rain, which began yesterday morning and fell slowly practically all day long, with prospects for still more during last night. Thus far it has been “just what the doctor ordered” and has done much to brighten the hopes of all of us for at least fair start toward a crop next year. Without it, many farmers considering planting no crop next spring-so it is easy to understand how much a good rain at this time means to the country hereabouts.

Thursday, Sept. 27, 1962

Judge Jay Friederich, Juvenile Commissioner Frank Hager, Police Lt. Glenn Miller, Patrolman Frank Peterson and Sheriff Walt Miltenberger attended the 51st Annual Peace Officers convention held in Fargo Thursday through Saturday, Sept. 13-15. About 600 peace officers registered at the convention.

A public hearing will be held Tuesday, Oct. 20 at 1 p.m. at the Pierce County Memorial Hall on a proposed project to establish “Hurricane Lake Drain No. 1,” according to a legal advertisement in this issue of The Tribune.

The hearing is being called by the water board members from Pierce, Benson, Rolette and Towner counties acting together as a “Hurricane Lake Joint Board”.

The joint board has initiated proceedings to establish Hurricane Lake Drain No. 1, which would involve the cleaning of the lake’s outlet channel (Ken’s Creek).

Pierce County Water Management Board chairman John S. Axtman, Rugby, said there is no guarantee the work on clearing the channel could begin this fall.

A weir or dam controls the level of Hurricane Lake. The proposed project would involve the clearing of three-fourths of one mile of Ken’s Creek-a project designed to prevent the flooding of farmland adjacent to Hurricane Lake, particularly in the spring.

Work to clear silt from Ken’s Creek was first undertaken in the late fall of 1974.
