At a recent school board meeting it was decided that there will be no addition built to the south side school this year. Owing to lack of space, it will be necessary to rent a place for some of the classes.

The north side school building was condemned by a building inspector of the Board of Administration and therefore will not be remodeled.

Rugby Mayor Dave Shelver said that residents should not be overly concerned about pedestrian safety after the Highway 3 project in Rugby is completed.

Several residents along Highway 3 have become concerned that the four-lane highway will have increased traffic and drivers will not obey the speed limit, making the highway especially dangerous for children.

Shelver said he has been in contact with those residents.

“There are those with the idea that four lanes will be difficult to cross,” Shelver said. “If you go to Bismarck or Minot, particularly Bismarck, and you drive the streets that head toward the Capitol and are four lanes one way, there are no flashing lights or anything, there is just the widened crosswalk and a sign.”

Shelver said the preliminary plans did not call for a crosswalk, but two crossing areas are being planned.

Shelver said many elementary school children on the southwest side of Rugby cross Highway 3 at 6th Street. Another crosswalk would be placed at 8th St., where the current “Y” intersection is. That intersection will be eliminated during the project and a perpendicular intersection will be placed at 7th St. for access to the downtown area.

Shelver also said the city will have to patrol the area heavily to educate the drivers to stay within the speed limit.
