Rugby dominates CNDC indoor

Track and Field athletes representing two Pierce County high schools competed in the Central North Dakota Conference meet Friday at the Minot State Dome.

The Rugby High School girls' team finished first in the meet, netting 142 points overall. Garrison was a distant second with 61 points, followed by Harvey/Wells County with 58, Des Lacs-Burlington with 55 and Benson County with 48 points.

Rugby High boys also finished first, scoring 124 overall points. Tyrel Yoder and Cole Slaubaugh represented Wolford High School on the Rolette/Wolford team. Rolette/Wolford took 17th place in the meet with five total points.

Sierra Tofte and Katie Yoder, both of Wolford School, competed on the Rolette/Wolford girls' team. Rolette/Wolford's girls placed 11th overall, tying Divide County's 19-point score.

Pole-vaulter Maria Blessum tied a record for her event. The Rugby High Senior, who will attend North Dakota State University next year on a pole-vaulting scholarship, cleared the 10'.6 ' bar, matching Langdon Area High's CNDC record set in 2016 by Jocelyn Dinius. Brooke Blessum took 2nd place in the event, with 8'6"; Anna Clements placed 3rd with 7'6", and Kelly Swanson placed 4th with 7'6".

Rugby's Kory Vetsch took 3rd place in the boys' pole vaulting event with a 9'6" score.

Panthers took top honors in the high jump, with Jaden Hamilton earning 1st place with a 6'3" score. Devan Michels earned 3rd place with 5'8", while Warren Walker came in 6th with 5'6".

The Lady Panthers also placed at the top in the high jump event, with Brooke Blessum's 5'1" jump earning 1st place. Wolford's Sierra Tofte placed 6th in the event, with a 4'3" jump, and Rugby's Peyton Hauck placed 8th with 4'5". Katie Yoder's 3'11" jump earned 10th place.

Brooke Blessum also took 1st in the triple jump event with 35'9.5". Rolette/Wolford's Emma Arnstein took 2nd with 32'7.5", while Rugby's Kelly Swanson took 5th place with her 31'8.5" jump. Rounding out the participants was Lauren Casavant with 26'10.5".

Hamilton took 3rd place in the boys' triple jump event, earning 6 points with his 40'8.5" score. Michels placed 4th, earning 5 points with a score of 40'3.75".

Anni Stier, who will attend Jamestown University and participate in track and field and basketball there next year, finished first in the 400 meter dash event with a time of 1:03:19. 5th place went to Mikalylee Livedalen, who finished with 1:10:11, while 8th place went to Emily Mattern with a time of 1:10:90. Also finishing the race for the Panthers were Ella Jacobson with a time of 1:13:08; Brooke Senger with a time of 1:13:97; Anna Johnson with a time of 1:16:12 and Risovi with a time of 1:19:11.

Panther Cody Jundt scored a time of 56.64 seconds, earning 3rd place in the boys' 400 meter dash. Walker earned 8th place with 57.61 seconds. Riley Odden finished with a time of 1:06.36, and Cole Fanestock finished with a time of 1:07.03. Tyrel Yoder of Rolette/Wolford finished with a time of 59.41 seconds.

Maria Blessum's 9.05 in the 55 meter hurdles event earned her first place, while Bella McCabe finished with 10.49 in 9th place. Clements finished with a score of 10.89; Hauck with 11.08; and Taylor Mayer with 11.42. Katie Yoder finished with 12.24.

J.D. Matehs' 8.19 finish earned him the top spot for boys' 55 meter hurdles, while Kory Vetsch finished with a 10.66 score in 12th place. Tyrel Yoder took 4th place for Rolette/Wolford with a score of 8.90.

Keith Vetsch took 2nd place in the 55 meter dash with a time of 6.50 seconds, while his brother, Kory took 18th place with a time of 7.16 seconds. Hudson Hooker finished with a time of 7.37 seconds, and Fanestock finished with a time of 7.69 seconds. Tyrel Yoder of Wolford/Rolette finished with a time of 7.01 seconds.

Rugby's Kristina Brossart finished 3rd in the girls' 55 meter dash with a time of 7.44 seconds. Other finishers were Mikaylee Livedalen with 8.09; Clements with 8.18; Sarah Blessum with 8.21; McCabe with 8.30; Anna Duchscherer with 8.30; Senger with 8.41; Anna Johnson with 8.53; Saige Connot with 9.07; Lauren Casavant with 9.16 and Elli Kuntz with 10.18. Katie Yoder finished for Rolette/Wolford with a time of 8.13.

Brossart finished the girls' 200 meter dash with a 2nd place time of 27.87 seconds, while Stier finished 3rd with a time of 28.49 seconds. Mattern finished with 30.10. Other finishers were: Duchscherer with 30.98; Sarah Blessum with 31.00; McCabe with 31.07; Mikaylee Livedalen with 31.31; Senger with 31.92; Clements with 31.99; Johnson with 32.62; Connot with 36.06 and Kuntz with 41.76. Sierra Tofte of Rolette/Wolford finished with a time of 34.22 seconds.

Keith Vetsch took 3rd place in the boys' 200 meter dash with a time of 24.70. Hooker finished with a time of 28.72; Fanestock finished in 28.73 seconds, and Riley Odden finished with a time of 29.51 seconds. Rolette/Wolford's Tyrel Yoder finished in 25.94 seconds.

Finishing the boys' 800 meter run were Cole Wentz, with a time of 2:26.45, and Dawson Schepp with a time of 2:26.71.

Girls finishing in the event were Ellie Duchscherer in 2:45.96; Joey Wolf with 2:58.41; Ella Jacobson with 3:03.15; Joran Jundt with 3:13.29 and Braelynn Oppen with 3:44.24.

Austin Dibble finished in 3rd place in the boys' 1600 meter run with a time of 5:21.15, while Dawson Schepp finished 4th with 5:28.32. Robert Dibble finished with a time of 5:44.54.

Rugby's Brooklyn Bartsch took 2nd place for the Rugby girls in the 1600 meter run, finishing in 6:07.62. Senior Karsyn Hager finished with a time of 6:29.73, and Rylie Suchor finished with a time of 6:47.25.

Rugby's A team finished in first place in the girls' 4x160 meter relay with a time of 1:29:32. Team members were Maria Blessum, Stier, Sarah Blessum and Brossart.

4x160 boys' A relay team members Keith Vetsch, Matehs, Hamilton and Jundt took 2nd place in their event with a time of 1:18.63.

Boys' B team members Riley Odden, Fanestock, Hooker and Kory Vetsch finished the 4x160 event with a time of 1:28.88.

Rugby girls also placed 1st in the 4x400 relay with a time of 4:28.86. Team members were Maria Blessum, Stier, Mattern and Duchsherer.

The Panther girls did not finish the 4x800 meter event.

Rugby Boys finished the 4x800 relay with a 1st place time of 9:45.25. Team members were Austin Dibble, Schepp, Landon Rost and Wentz. The boys finished the 4x400 meter in 3rd place with a time of 3:50.96. The team consisted of Walker, Wentz, Matehs and Jundt.

Rost finished the boys' 3200 meter run in 5th place with a time of 13:02.82.

Long jump finishers for the Panthers were Michels (2nd place) with 20'1" and Hamilton with 19'11", for 3rd place.

Panther girls completing the long jump were Kelly Swanson (3rd place) with 15'4.25"; Brooke Blessum (4th place), 15'3.75"; Hauck with 14'4.5"; Mayer with 13'5"; Risovi with 13'0.25", and Casavant with 10'9.25".

Students placing in the boys' shot put event were Isaiah Bundy-Smith with a score of 37.05 and Ethan Brandt with a score of 31.10. Participants and scores in the girls' shot put event were: Jacoby Glasser, 29'2.25"; Brooke Anderson with 27'2"; Tesha Sobolik with 26'2"; Riley Grove with 25'11"; Lauren Voeller with 24'0.75" and Niah Wollenzien with 21'6".

"We've got a pretty strong and experienced team coming back," noted Rugby Coach Bill Jansen, who also managed the event. "It's nice to get on a track and into some pits, and get into a high jump pad, and pole vault pad, and start doing some things and competing against some kids."

Jansen said of future meets, "I'm hoping as the season goes on and we get some good weather, we have a good showing."
