August 24, 2018
Pierce County Tribune

Nine-man football season was in full swing last week.

In Region 4 action, the St. John Woodchucks started the season off with a 42-24 victory over the North Border (Neche-Pembina-Walhalla) Eagles. The Woodchucks were able to get two scores on the board in the first half, but the Eagles would get three in before halftime. The Woodchucks came back in the second half with four touchdowns, one of them a 76-yard run from Adam Jollie.

The Woodchucks traveled to Rolla on Friday for a region matchup against the North Prairie Cougars.

- The Cougars found themselves on the wrong side of a 44-0 shutout last week against the New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets. The Rockets established a commanding lead early, with quarterback Teddy Almaras capping off three different drives by making connections with two different junior wide receivers.

The Rockets hosted the Benson County Wildcats on Friday. The Wildcats lost last week, 56-14, to the Surrey Mustangs.

- The North Star Bearcats had their first victory of the season Tuesday in a 50-30 home win over Nelson County. The Bearcats hosted the Drake-Anamoose Raiders Friday. The Raiders lost 58-8 to the Central McLean Cougars last week.

- In a 48-18 loss last week, the Towner-Granville-Upham Titans were unable to get on the board until the second quarter with senior quarterback Garrett Bailey returning a 22-yard pick six.

Their opponent however, the Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood Mavericks, struck first.

The Titans wouldn't get on the board again until the fourth quarter. At the 10:22 mark, quarterback Jared Lovro found Cy Luna on a 38-yard pass for one score, and at 0:18 Lovro found Cy's brother Shayden on a 15-yard pass for another score.

The Titans traveled to Dunseith on Friday in a regional matchup against the Dunseith Dragons. The Dragons last week found themselves the victims of a late score in a 38-36 loss to the Four Winds Indians.
