SERVING OUR VETERANS: Update on veterans benefits, upcoming events

August 17, 2018
Ron Montonye - Pierce County Veterans Service Officer , Pierce County Tribune

The Fargo Veterans Affairs (VA) Health Care System (HCS) and Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA) will hold a Veterans Town Hall and Claims Clinic August 23rd from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Ward County Administration Building (225 3rd St. SE, Minot) in the veteran's room on the first floor. The Town Hall is free to both veterans and the public. The purpose is to share information, hear feedback and answer questions about VA health care and benefits. A claims clinic will be held prior to the Town Hall from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Veterans can submit claims for compensation benefits and vocational rehabilitation and employment benefits.

The new Dickinson VA Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) will host a Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony August 22nd at 1:00 p.m. (MDT) to celebrate the opening of the new clinic. Likewise, the new Williston VA CBOC will host their Grand Opening August 23rd at 1:00 p.m. (CST). Both clinics are approximately 7500 square feet and feature a wide range of services to include: primary care services, behavorial health services, preventive health services, laboratory services, and prescription services.

The Fargo VA offers Advanced Care Planning every day, Monday through Friday, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Fargo VA Medical Center. Planning sessions are held in Room 1C-86. Those veterans located near CBOC's can visit their CBOC (Minot and Devils Lake in our area) and attend via video conference. The Advanced Care Planning will offer veterans, spouses and family an opportunity to: complete a health care directive that lets your providers and family know what your personal values are; complete an advanced directive which lets you make preferences about your health care; and determine who will speak for you if you cannot speak for yourself.

A multi-county (Rolette, Towner, Pierce, and McHenry) Veterans Wellness Conference will be held September 19th and 20th from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Sky Dancer Casino Event Center. It is being sponsored by Rolette County. Many veteran and community health care agencies will be available to assist with questions and claims. Please bring your VA I.D or DD-214. Spouses are welcome.

A North Central Veterans Stand Down will be held October 25th from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Armed Forces Resource Center in Minot, ND. This is located at 3420 2nd St. NE, just north of the Minot International Airport. Information will be provided in regard to: veterans' benefits, health care, hygiene items, personal care services, employment assistance, housing assistance, counseling, legal services and food and clothing needs. Please bring your DD-214 or a VA ID card.

Applications are now being taken for the North Dakota Native Veterans Honor Flight. The Honor Flight recognizes all American veterans for their sacrifices and achievements, flying them to Washington D.C. to see their respective Memorial. This is provided at no cost to the veteran. Top priority will be given to those World War II veterans who have not yet had a trip, followed by Korean War veterans and terminally ill veterans from all wars. For more information, contact them at 701-477-8995.

Please save these dates and events should you be interested in attending. Feel free to contact me should you need further information. Despite the negative publicity the VA has received over the past years, it is good to know they are still attempting to assist all veterans, including those in our state of North Dakota.
