Pierce County photographer, part time farmer, and mom, Christine Schmaltz was inducted into the North Dakota Track Hall of Fame with a presentation of an honor plaque. The plaque was presented to her by Allan Knutson in Bismarck this May because of her North Dakota lifetime achievements in the 800-meter run.

Schmaltz graduated from Watford City High School in 2006. She was the North Dakota State B Champion in the 800-meter run from 2003 through 2006. She also held the state championship in the 400-meter run both junior and senior years of high school. She is the current Class B record holder still in the 800-meter.

Schmaltz attended NDSU from 2006 2011. During that time she won the 2010 Summit League championship in the indoor and outdoor 800-meter. She held the 2011 Summit League championship in the indoor 800m and outdoor 800m and 1500m. In the NCAA National Track and Field Championships she placed 9th in the 800m run, and she placed 8th in the 2011 USA Track & Field National Championships in the 800m run with a time of 2:01.17, which is still the current NDSU school record. This was the fastest 800m overall collegiate time in 2011.

When asked how the honor made her feel, Schmaltz said “I am pretty proud of it. There are so many great track coaches and athletes in North Dakota. I feel very honored to be included in the ND Track Hall of Fame.”

She continued, ” I have had several distinguished coaches and teammates over the years that made my track career very memorable. I could not have gotten to where I was if it wasn’t for them and the support from my family!”

When asked if she could still run that fast, she laughed and said “No I can’t still run like that. I chase after my three kids instead, whom they all claim to be faster than me now!”

Schmaltz and her husband Michael farm in Pierce County, where they are raising their children.
