Wrestlers place at East-West tourney

Members of the Rugby High School wrestling team competed last week at the East-West Tournament at New Salem-Almont.

D.J. Schneibel took first place, winning by major decision over Lisbon's Ben Shearer. Schneibel advanced to the quarterfinals by way of a first round bye. There he won by pin over Seth Owens (Hillsboro-Central Valley). In the next round Schneibel won by decision over Riley Molter (South Border).

Riley Zachmeier took second place, losing the first place match to Kyle Burwick (Hettinger-Scranton) by major decision. Zachmeier advanced to the first place match after defeating Gary Cook (Alexander), Simon Sveum (Lisbon) and Austin Burgard (Oakes) all by pin.

Joey Berg (138) took fourth place, losing by decision to Darin Vangorkom (South Border). Berg won the first round of the championships in a decisive victory over Derek Faul (Harvey-Wells County), however he was sent to the consolation round following a quarterfinal loss by decision to Kaiden Bredahl (Des Lacs-Burlington). In the consolation rounds, Berg defeated both Trent Anderson (Stanley) and Brett Wendel (LaMoure) by pin before winning by decision over Michael Clifton (Carrington) to advance to the third place match.

Ridley Odden (106) was sent to the consolation rounds following a loss by pin to Hettinger-Scranton's Conner Andress. In the consolation rounds Odden defeated Cade Martian (Bowman County-Beach) by pin, however he later lost by decision to Wesley Harvey (Bishop Ryan).

Aden Jensen was sent to the consolation rounds following a first round loss by major decision to Andrew Hoff (LaMoure). In the consolation round Jensen lost by pin to Carlos Martinez (Hettinger-Scranton).

Brady Volk was sent to the consolation rounds following a loss to Tate Hoggarth (Carrington). Volk would later lose by decision to Bryan Tavares (New Salem-Almont).

The wrestling team is competing today at regional duels in Rugby. The next action includes more regional competition next Saturday in Des Lacs-Burlington.
