January 5, 2018
Bonnie Remmick - Tribune Reporter , Pierce County Tribune

The no. 9-ranked Rugby Panthers played the Towner-Granville-Upham Titans in Class B girls basketball at Towner High School Tuesday evening. Previously Rugby had beaten the Titans 48-17 in the last game in District 11 play in Leeds at the 2017 CNDC Girls Tournament. This was the night for revenge but it was not to happen.

In the first minute of Tuesday nights game, Rugby scored 5 points, with Anni Stier scoring the first three pointer of the game. Their were two fouls by Jaidyn Brummond of the Titans. After the Titans had a turnover inbound, and Tristin Lunde scored a two pointer for the Panthers, Titans coach Malcolm Marcus called a timeout.

It wasn't looking good for the Titans in the first two minutes when the score flew to 7-0 Panthers. With 6:14 left in the first quarter Karsyn Hager scored, bringing the score 10-0, and the Panthers couldn't be stopped as Maddie Uhlenkamp and Stier scored two more each bringing it to 14-0.

The action picked up with the Titans finally getting on the board with a bucket in the first quarter. Quickly the Titans picked up speed and brought the score up by five but was upended by Lunde getting a two pointer. The battle continued the first quarter and ended with 27-10. What started out slow for the Titans picked up by the end of the first quarter and they were making the Panthers work.

The second quarters action started with Stier getting into the action taking the Panthers to 29-10, followed by Grace Bachmeier, of the Titans, scoring a 3-point bucket making it 32-13. Already the Titans had made more points this game than they had in the last game with Rugby. The action continued and ended the second quarter with 45-23 Panthers. The Titans' Neeleigh Wollenzien, a 5'6" sophomore, scored in the last few seconds of the second quarter with a nice bucket. The action ended with the second quarter with 45-23 Panthers.

"That felt really good," Wollenzien said.

The first half of the game had eleven fouls and five fouls in the second half.

In the third quarter, the Titans raced in to get a two point shot but quickly was followed by Stier getting five points within the first ten seconds of the third quarter to make the score 52-29. It was now a possibility of a running clock for the fourth quarter. Maria Blessum scored a three point bringing the score 56-29. However the quarter ended with 59-34 Rugby and there would not be a running clock the 4th quarter.

The fourth quarter opened with both teams allowing junior varsity girls to get in some action time. Maria Blessum scored an early basket and it was 61-34. Jaidyn Brummond had the first basket for the Titans in the 4th taking the score 67-36. With two minutes left in the fourth, junior varsity members got in play time from both sides. The TGU Titans scored two points in the 4th quarter. The game ended with a score of Rugby Panthers 71 and Towner TGU Titans 36. Rugby is now 1 0 for the season and TGU Titans 0-1.

Rugby hosted Westhope/Newburg last night. The next game will be Monday, January 8 at Drake High School where the Panthers take on the Drake-Anamoose Raiders.
