Panther boys fall to Mavericks

December 29, 2017

Ball recognition and communication problems on defense plagued the Rugby Panther boys basketball team in a 62-49 loss at home last week to the Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood Mavericks.

"We have a really youthful group that hasn't played against any of these varsity guys coming in," said Panthers head coach Mike Santjer. "So really Landen Foster's the only one that's battled against them and knows the guys coming in.

"A lot of it is scouting reports, understanding scouting reports, it's a learning process."

Landen Foster breaks away from a grounded Mavericks defender. Foster led the Panthers in scoring with 13 points in a 62-49 loss to Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood.

Mavericks forward Issac Undlin who scored 20 points on the night, 18 of them from outside caused problems for the Panther defense.

"The Undlin kid obviously is a great player and a good shooter, and we didn't recognize where he was all the time. We didn't communicate very well on the defensive side," Santjer. said. "He got a ton of great looks and, unfortunately for us, he put a lot of them in tonight.

The Mavericks got the lead on an 8-2 run early in the first quarter, while the Panthers were held to nine points on the quarter. The Mavericks would end the quarter with 15 points on the board.

The Panthers would go on to have two quarters where they outscored the Mavericks by razor-thin margins.

The Panthers outscored the Mavericks by just a bucket (18-16) in the second quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Panthers were 2-for-2 in one trip to the foul line for forward Seth Jaeger; while Mavericks guard Chase Gates went to the line just over a minute later and only went 1-for-2 for a 15-14 difference.

The Panthers traveled to Minot yesterday to take on the Beulah Miners. The next action for the Panthers will be a home game Thursday, Jan. 4, against the Des Lacs-Burlington Lakers, starting at 4:15 p.m.
