SERVING OUR VETERANS: What is the main mission of a soldier?

October 20, 2017
Ron Montonye - Pierce County Veterans Service Officer , Pierce County Tribune

The North Central Veterans Stand Down event will be held October 26, 2017 from 10 a.m. To 3 p.m., at the Armed Forces Reserve Center in Minot. This is located at 3420 2nd St NE, just north of the Minot International Airport. This is a free event to all veterans looking for information regarding such subjects as benefits, healthcare, personal care services, employment assistance, housing assistance, counseling, hygiene items, food and clothing. If possible, bring your DD214 or VA card as proof of Veteran status.

My intent in writing this column, and future columns, is not only to provide information for veterans in regard to filing for benefits, but also for all readers to develop a deeper appreciation for what our veterans have done for us. In return, this deeper connection will make us want to reach out to them and help them when we can. Hopefully the stories I write, and my thoughts, will help us feel a closer commitment to our veterans.

My question of the day is, what do you feel is the main mission of a soldier? My answer to this would be to help maintain, preserve, or bring a new peace in our land or in a place beyond our borders. Conflicts, battles, and war may be necessary. Lives may be lost or forever changed. In the short term, the mission may be to win an engagement, a battle, or just survive to live another day. But, in the final picture, the mission is to end the conflict, let the soldiers go home, and bring a peaceful resolution to the situation. So, in the overall view, the mission of a soldier is to be a peacemaker.

Let us remember this daily and truly appreciate all those who have served, or who are serving today, in our Armed Forces. Let us be grateful for the peace they have obtained throughout the history of our nation. Let us not forget what is said in the Beatitudes, found in the Book of Mathew, "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the sons of God."

When we count our blessings, let us not forget these peacemakers who have done so much for this great land of ours.

Montonye's office hours at the Pierce County Courthouse are Wednesdays from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
