FFA members compete at State Land Judging

August 18, 2017
Pierce County Tribune

Dickinson- On Thursday August 3, Rugby FFA members Brady Volk, Hayden Thingvold and Breanna Thompson, along with advisor Kasey Okke traveled to Dickinson to compete in the North Dakota State Land Judging competition. The students are challenged to judge four soils pits by determining surface and sub soil texture, slope of the land, depth of current topsoil and erosion hazards. The students are then asked to give recommendations to treat the land. These include, but are not limited to, recommending wind-strip cropping, planting wind breaks, and using no-till production. The students are also given information on soil fertility and the intended use of the ground and are asked for fertilizer recommendations based off that information. The team placed third overall and received a gold rating.
