Rugby Public School Board discusses NCACTC membership and storm makeup days

By Staff | Mar 17, 2017

The Rugby Public School District #5 School Board met Tuesday to discuss membership in the North Central Area Career and Technology Center (NCACTC).

The NCACTC provides career and technical education to high school students in the north central area of North Dakota. There are currently 12 member schools in NCACTC. Three schools have recently decided not to remain members, however.

Rugby school board members contemplated options including voting to dissolve the program, discontinuing membership in the program, and staying in the program. With the absence of other school members in the program, it is possible that membership fees would increase. These fees are currently costing the district $6,000 per year.

The board will make a final decision regarding the district’s membership in the program after the NCACTC meeting later this month.

Because of multiple school cancellations due to winter storms, all school days will be extended by 35 minutes for two weeks, beginning March 20 and continuing through March 31. Students will be released at 3:50 p.m. if they ride the bus, and all other students will be dismissed at 3:55 p.m. The late releases will cover the sixth storm makeup day for this school year.

Assessment data at the Rugby Early Learning Center show an average of an eight-point increase in both reading and math for the class of 2029.

Testing at both the elementary school and the high school will be starting within the next few weeks for students in grades 3-6 and 7-10.

Parent Teacher Conferences will be held March 20-21 from 4-7p.m.

The district is currently exploring the possibility of having an emotional disturbance classroom at RHS. The project would be made possible with help from the Lone Tree Special Education Unit.

North Dakota State University is looking at partnering with Rugby to create a Teacher Academy Masters Program. The program would need at least 12 interested teachers to start in the summer of 2018.

Ely Elementary School’s Jump Rope for Heart program raised over $13,000 this year.

The next school board meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 11 at 7 a.m. in the RHS board room.
