9-man football roundup

October 28, 2016
Pierce County Tribune

As of last week, only two teams from Region 4 remain in the fight for a spot at the state championship.

Fresh off a first round bye, the top-seeded North Prairie Cougars ate up yardage and gained a commanding early lead in a 62-6 trouncing of the Divide County Maroons.

Senior quarterback Brody Cahill proved to be a threat on the ground, scoring on a 72-yard running play to put the Cougars on the board first. Cahill ran for 48 yards on another scoring play, and then later connected with classmates Jared Loing and Carson Wilkes on passing plays.

The Maroons were unable to respond until the fourth quarter, with a 72-yard run from junior quarterback Aidan Eriksmoen.

The Cougars take on the Kenmare-Bowbells-Burke Central Honkers today in a battle for a semifinal berth.

The St. John Woodchucks take on the New Salem-Glen Ullin Holsteins today after emerging victorious from a close one with the Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood Mavericks.

The matchup came down to quarterback keepers, as Mavericks sophomore QB Issac Undlin was able to put his squad on the board first on a 7-yard run.

The Woodchucks then snatched the lead away in the second quarter, with junior QB Bryor Parisien running it in for scores and points after twice.

After a no-scoring third quarter, Undlin was able to put the Mavericks on the board again on a 2-yard run with a conversion following. The Mavericks lost 16-14.

The Holsteins ended the Towner-Granville-Upham Titans' season last week with a 40-12 loss.

Less than a minute into the game, running back Garret Soupir put the Holsteins up early with a 54-yard run. Then sophomore quarterback Evan Henke found senior tight end Shane Forster for a second score. The Titans were able to respond on a one-yard keeper from Kolter Schell with just over two minutes to go in the quarter.

Soupir then took over, scoring on two plays from the five-yard line.

The Titans would later score in garbage time with Schell connecting with Cole Bethke on a pass into the end zone.
