End is nigh for cross country teams

October 14, 2016
Carl Hauser - Special to the Tribune , Pierce County Tribune

With the regular season in the rearview mirror for the Rugby Cross Country teams, their attention now pins on the two most important meets of the fall, Regionals and State. A successful fall has found the teams both ranked in the top five of the Coaches Poll, the boys ranked second in state while the girls are fourth. "We have had kids step up all season," mentioned Coach Bill Jansen, "I have been pleased with the teams." Dawson Schepp is ranked ninth individually in the State for the boys.

Regionals today (Saturday the 15th) is being held in Cooperstown. The teams have competed twice already there, and have been on the same course once. Familiarity will certainly aid into the drive for finishing first on both teams. The strength in numbers is also a factor today and next Saturday at the State Meet. The top 5-7 runners have finished relatively close to each other which has only benefited the Panthers.

Hillsboro/Central Valley with present challenges for both the guys and gals as well as Hatton/Northwood/Thompson at the Regional Meet. Look for the results next weekend and good luck to the Cross Country teams these next few weekends.

Hauser is the sports director for AM 1450 KZZJ Radio, Rugby.
