Dakota College at Bottineau Announces Commencement Exercise

Dakota College at Bottineau is proud to announce their annual graduation ceremony to be held on Friday, May 13th at 3:00pm. 2016 marks the 110th ceremony at Dakota College at Bottineau. Dakota College at Bottineau opened in 1906 as the North Dakota School of Forestry.

The 2016 ceremony will be held in the gymnasium of Thatcher Hall. One-hundred seventeen students are candidates for their associate degrees, diplomas, and certificates and over one-half will be in attendance for the event. Dakota College graduate's students in fields of health care, web design, information technology, wildlife along with a strong liberal arts program. They are also known for a robust distance-learning program in the state of ND provided through on-line courses and dual credit offerings at area high schools.

Guest speakers were selected for their commitment, support and academic success at Dakota College at Bottineau. Mattie Schmitt, a sophomore originally from Towner graduating with her Associate of Science in Liberal Arts, will deliver comments on behalf of the student body. Ms. Schmitt was chosen through a process involving students, staff, and faculty senates. She was recognized as a ND Community College Scholar. Her plans after graduation will be to transfer to Crookston University for Fall of 2016 where she will double major in Agronomy and Ag-Business. Mattie has been significantly involved in DCB's programs as well as an excellent student athlete, participating in volleyball and basketball for the Lady Jacks.

Alumnus Honorable Anthony Swain Benson, Judge of the District Court, was selected as this year's graduation speaker. He graduated from North Dakota State University-Bottineau Branch in 1991, which is now Dakota College at Bottineau, with an Associate Degree in Mathematics. From there he attended North Dakota State University, graduating in 1994 with a Bachelor Degree in Liberal Arts. After working for a time, he attended the University of North Dakota School of Law, receiving his Juris Doctor, With Distinction, in 2000. After law school, Judge Benson moved back to Bottineau, and was in private practice with his father at the Benson Law Office, through 2015.
