Carmen Mak is a foreign exchange student from Hong Kong attending Rugby High School this year.

Mak said between Rugby and Hong Kong, students are different.

"Here, students are encouraged to join sports. They have a lot of passion," Mak said. "In Hong Kong, the students are only encouraged to study all the time."

Mak joined passionate students on the cross country and track teams, as well as speech and one-act play during her time here.

Mak said her first impression of Rugby was how cold it was. Her year in Rugby led to her seeing snow for the first time.

Mak said something that surprised her was the school.

"The students can wear their casual wear to school, when (in Hong Kong) I had to wear my uniform," Mak said. "You can talk in class, you can eat in class, you can bring your cell phone, and the teachers act like friends."

Mak will return to Hong Kong in late June. She said she would love to return to Rugby one day.
