March 25, 2016
Pierce County Tribune

Twenty-One of the Rugby Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Chapter members will be attending the State Leadership Conference and Competition in Bismarck, April 3-5. The conference will be held at the Bismarck Civic Center and will be filled with over 1,300, professionally dressed students, competing in events testing their business knowledge and skills in a variety of individual, team and chapter events. Rugby students will be competing in the following events: Introduction to Financial Math, Agricultural Business, Business Law, Business Communication, Business Procedures, Securities and Investments, Insurance & Risk Management, Spelling & Proofreading Skills, Business Calculations, Career Exploration, Introduction to Business, Introduction to Information Technology and Introduction to Business Communication. The top four winners in each event qualify to attend the National Leadership Conference and Competition in Atlanta, Georgia, June 27 July 3, 2016. These conferences allow for expanding skills such as leadership and networking. Also, students have the opportunity to travel, make lasting friendships and unforgettable memories.

In addition to preparing for the competitive events, advisors Paola Trottier and Christine Schmaltz ensure that members spend time during the year fundraising, volunteering, provide community service, manage the RHS concession stand, plan and celebrate FBLA week and work on their Business Achievement Activities (BAA's). In order for a student to attend the State Leadership Conference, they must complete one level of the BAA's. The BAA's involve four levels of leadership achievement (Future Level, Business Level, Leader Level and the top award that is presented at the National Leadership Conference is the America Level). Each level consists of activities within the business education curriculum, leadership elements; FBLA-PBL goals, business programs and partnerships; NBEA Standards; integrated classroom activities; chapter requirements and projects. The BAA activities take into consideration the strategic needs at each level of the association and are influenced by current business trends, practices and corporate needs.

FBLA is a professional organization for students in grades 8-12 interested in pursuing and learning about business and business related careers. This year's theme of "Connect," reflects the goals of all FBLA members, some of the best and brightest of today's young people. Its mission is to bring business and education together in a positive working relationship through innovative leadership and career development programs.
