North Dakota Senators John Hoeven and Heidi Heitkamp announced Tuesday that the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) has awarded $1,075,793 for Head Start and Early Head Start programs operated by Early Explorers, a grantee of Towner, Granville and Upham (TGU) School District No. 60.

The funds will be used to support low-income families and children through early childhood education, as well as health, nutritional, social and other services.

"[Tuesday's] award is an investment in the health, education and general well-being of children and families in north-central North Dakota," Hoeven said in a press release. "The impact of such support can be felt now and will carry into our future, helping to ensure the continued success of our communities and our people."

"Every dollar we invest in Head Start and Early Head Start programs are an investment in our kid's future," said Heitkamp. "Early childhood education gives our children the knowledge and skills to set them on a strong path forward and build solid futures. Head Start programs have been assets to North Dakota's families and communities over the years, and I'm excited these federal funds will continue to support these organizations and the children they teach."

Head Start programs serve children ages 3-5. Early Head Start programs serve infants and toddlers.
