FBLA Travels to Omaha

December 4, 2015
Pierce County Tribune

Imagine if you will 2500 students from around the country, all registered FBLA members, attending the FBLA National Fall Leadership Conference at the Omaha Hilton in Nebraska November 6-7, 2015. These students demonstrated a commitment to leadership excellence by attending this conference and maximized their investment by participating and attending in the many workshops and activities provided. Five students from Rugby High School FBLA chapter attended; Dessa Denich, Morgan Hjelden, Amber Schmaltz, Preston Tryba and Jenna Wangler.

The conference opening and closing sessions were held at the Century Link Convention Center. Opening session keynote speaker Patty Hendrickson did an excellent job on necessary leadership skills, engagement in what you do every day and self-motivation techniques. Ms. Hendrickson is the President of Hendrickson Leadership Group, Inc., motivational speaker, and is a former FBLA member (from Wisconsin), served as a State FBLA officer and was active at the post-secondary level as a PBL member. Aaron Davis, closing keynote speaker, is the president of Aaron Davis Presentations, Inc. Chief Operations Officer of The Thomas Group, the cofounder of several other profitable business ventures and has authored and coauthored several books. He believes his success has afforded him the opportunities to help companies succeed because he lives and walks his challenges daily in the trenches of his own companies.

Rugby FBLA members that attended the two-day conference will tell you that they believed the conference was very inspiring and motivational and they listened to presentations that offered valuable information that they can now share with the rest of the chapter. Session topics included fundraising, comprehensive resume construction, networking, importance of credit, becoming a millionaire, connecting through community service, dressing for success, international and global business sense, career planning, the benefits of mentoring and coaching opportunities, financial literacy, soft skills, time management, digital citizenship and certainly not least chapter management and improvement ideas. All presenters were industry leaders and experts in their fields. The 20 exhibit booths provided fundraising options, college information, Army ROTC leadership information, H & R Block Budget Challenge, March of Dimes, the FBLA Professional Division and of course the postsecondary division of FBLA, Phi Beta Lambda (PBL). The FBLA Marketplace was available for official FBLA-PBL merchandise.

In addition to the conference students also had the wonderful opportunity to see several sites of Omaha; The Old Market, dine at Spaghetti Works and spend several hours at the Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium. This zoo is open year-round, has the world's largest indoor dessert, America's largest indoor rainforest, world-class Scott Aquarium, IMAX theater and more!

This conference was designed to help members CONNECT (2015-2016 FBLA theme) to the coming year. With this valuable foundation they can now begin plans for local fundraising activities, and planning for the State Leadership Conference and Competition in Bismarck April 3-5, 2016. Students who place 1-4 at state then are eligible to attend the National Leadership Conference and Competition in Atlanta, Georgia June 29-July 2, 2016.
