The Miss Rugby Scholarship Pageant for 2016 was held on August 15th at Rugby High School’s Tilman Hovland Auditorium. The pageant is a preliminary to the Miss North Dakota and Miss North Dakota’s Outstanding Teen pageants, which are held in Williston.

When you see these ladies go out on stage you see courage and self-esteem. You see women putting themselves on the line with no safety net and doing it with grace and confidence. A pageant is a celebration of women breaking boundaries with their intellect, talent and determination. To me, that is the real beauty behind the pageant. Having the courage to be in a beauty pageant is no small feat. With female participants showcasing their public speaking skills, achievements, community service and talents all while being judged in front of a strangers and family. Why? So they can be a part of a long glorious tradition of positive community change and for female empowerment.

This year’s pageant was no different. These young ladies put it on the line for the privilege to represent their communities in the upcoming Miss North Dakota Pageant.

The princess program participants were: Jesse Wolf, Knox; Alayna Foster-DeVold, Fargo; Emma Loughman, Rugby; Andrea Arnold, Esmond; and Ryli Kuhnhenn, Rugby. The princesses performed the opening number “This is Me”, to an enthralled crowd. In addition, they showed off their talents, showcased sportswear and strutted their stuff with party wear. All of the princesses were crowned and received a certificate. Arnold was voted the People’s Choice winner for this year’s pageant

The Outstanding Teen participants were well- represented by the talented and poised Alexis Davis, Lyndsey Scheurer, Nicole McCullough and Riley Grove. Grove was named Miss Rugby’s Outstanding Teen 2016; Scheurer was named Miss Geographic Center’s Outstanding Teen 2016; and McCullough was named Miss Pierce County’s Outstanding Teen 2016. The winners received, among other things, an Official Teen Sash with Crown and a photo shoot from Photos By Misti. They will represent Rugby at the Miss N.D. Outstanding Teen pageant in 2016.

Grove said, when asked her feeling about being crowned Miss Rugby’s Outstanding Teen, “Since starting pageants, I’ve always wanted to represent my hometown. I am very proud to be from Rugby and am excited to tell people about our community. I want to do a lot of volunteering around the area and promote my platform, ‘Plant a Seed for a Better Tomorrow’. I want people to know there is a lot more to pageants than pretty dresses and winning a crown. It’s great! I am so excited to represent my hometown this year!”

Scheurer shared about her accomplishment, “I’m excited to be ‘Miss Geographic Center’s Outstanding Teen’ this year as I promote my platform, represent the pageant system, and compete at state next June! I’ve always loved Rugby and they put on such a great pageant every year!”

McCullough added about her being crowned, “It feels amazing to be Miss Pierce County’s Outstanding Teen 2016. Since I got back to Fargo I’ve seen nothing but support from my family, Kerry Faine, Joe Faine, and J.D. Odegard, my teammates on the West Fargo High School Varsity Cheerleading Team, and coworkers at the West Fargo Tutti Frutti. I can’t wait for the wonderful opportunities I will have during my reign for the Outstanding Teen organization and all of the other title holders I’ll get to know at state.” Nicole’s mother, who is a big part of her success shared, “Nicole and I have been doing pageants (both as a Mother-Daughter team and individually) for a long time. Our favorite is the Outstanding Teen organization because of the skills that are built in the areas of interview, public speaking and talent. This focus allows girls to build beauty from the inside out. Making it so much more than just a beauty pageant. “

The Miss contestants that competed at the pageant were: Savanna Buskness, Kelsie Kite, Sabrina Wolfe and Elizabeth Jensen. All the contestants exemplified class, grace, intelligence and beauty and all deserved the crown. In the end, Wolfe was named Miss Rugby 2016, and Jensen was named Miss Geographic Center 2016, both deserving of the accolades. Both Wolfe and Jensen received $500 scholarships, official miss sashes with crowns, photo shoots from Photos by Misti, and spots to represent Rugby at the Miss North Dakota State Pageant in Williston in 2016.

Wolfe shared about being crowned, “I am excited and honored to be crowned Miss Rugby! I can’t wait to see where the year will take me and I look forward to experiencing all the opportunities that this title holds! I will be promoting my platform, ‘Not Just A Trend: Celiac Disease Awareness’, and volunteering wherever I can!”

Jensen shared, “I am very honored to be Miss Geographic Center and not only to be a representative for the Rugby Area but for the great State of North Dakota. I’ve always looked up to the women who have competed at Miss America, not just because of their elegant gowns but for the fact they all stood up for something they were truly passionate for. Five months ago, I would have never imagined that I could one day be on the same path where they all started. With the help from Miss Fargo 2015 (Faye Stromberg) I signed up for my first Local Pageant 3 days before it took place and was crowned Miss Peace Garden 2015. I very excited to start partnering with other organizations and to speak with people about my platform, ‘You are more than words: Promoting Anti-Bullying and Self Worth’. It’s going to be a wonderful year of Style, Scholarship, Service, and Success.”

This year’s pageant had it all: beauty, grace, intelligence, passion, and opinionated young ladies who were strong enough to express their visions of the world and their place in it. This enduring competition is definitely more than pretty dresses and winning a crown.
