Community Supports Village Arts ‘Oliver!’

June 19, 2015
Pierce County Tribune

Summer recreation means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. The month of June has been reserved for 48 years by many community people for evenings of rehearsals for Village Arts' annual summer musical.

This June is no different as area youth and adults practice songs, dances and dialogue for the upcoming production of "Oliver!" The hours cast and crew dedicate to productions are all part of a long lived tradition of community giving.

Director Glory Monson spoke about the level of community support Village Arts has enjoyed over the past 48 years. "I don't suppose most people realize Rugby is one of the few small rural communities in North Dakota with an arts organization. The only way Village Arts survived all these years was because of our community support. This support has been through participation onstage and backstage, through attendance by audiences and financial support from the community."

Both Monson and Music Director Deb Jenkins reflected on the value of the organization based on comments made to them. Jenkins said," We have been told that families decided to stay in the Rugby area based on access to arts events and activities." Monson added," One of the things that has pleased me most is finding out that some of our own Village Arts artists have gone on to found their own theatre, writing , visual arts, dance or music groups in other communities. That kind of replication means that other communities are enjoying the arts because people got their start in Rugby."

A few years ago Monson's daughter wrote a motto for Village Arts. Monson said, "It reads 'True giving is an art of the soul.' That really sums up our kind of community giving."

Advance tickets for the current production of "Oliver!" are on sale at the Heart of America Library through June 27 and then will be sold at the door as available. Sales hours are Monday - Thursday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, on Friday from 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM and on Saturday from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. All seats are reserved.
