Schmidt: Fumigation certification sessions planned

February 27, 2015
Yolanda Schmidt - County Agent , Pierce County Tribune

If you are an expiring private pesticide applicator in Pierce County you should have received notification of upcoming trainings offered in Pierce County and nearby counties. Last year a number of people expressed interest in having a private fumigation certification session in Pierce County. In case anyone missed seeing that in the list of trainings accompanying the expiration notifications, or if there is anyone interested in fumigation certification that did not receive a letter, I wanted to make sure agriculture producers were aware that Pierce County will also be offering a private fumigation certification training on Tuesday, March 24 at 9:30 a.m. at the Pierce County Courthouse Community Meeting room in the lower level of the courthouse.

Please remember that new applicators and those who have let their certification lapse will need to re-test, and a separate testing period has been scheduled (see below). Testing will not be available the day of the training you attend.

As you know, this year I have begun implementing the pre-registration system as is done currently in many other counties. This change is three-fold. Having pre-registration allows me to know how many applicators to plan for which is critical during big re-certification years such as this year. Second, limiting the number of participants allows for a better teaching and learning atmosphere. Third, at some point in the future, registrations will be moving to an online format so in an effort to minimize confusion during the transition at that time I have decided now is the time to begin getting Pierce County applicators acclimated to this coming change. Your cooperation and understanding is appreciated.

If you are a current private pesticide applicator or fumigator with a license expiring in April 2015, you will be able to re-certify by pre-registering and attending one of the following remaining meetings that will be held in Rugby on the following dates:

PESTICIDE CERTIFICATION TRAINING

Thursday, March 12, 2015 8 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Rugby Eagles check-in @ 7:30a.m.

Thursday, March 26, 2015 1 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Rugby Eagles check-in @ 12:20p.m.

FUMIGATION CERTIFICATION TRAINING

Tuesday, March 24, 2015 9:30 a.m. at the Pierce County Courthouse Community Meeting Room.

TESTING PERIOD

Friday, March 27, 2015 9:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. at the Pierce County Courthouse Community Meeting Room.

Please be sure to bring photo identification with you to trainings and testing period.

Please keep in mind that if you or someone you know is on the county line and happens to be a resident of the neighboring county you are listed as such in our Private Applicator Database. This means that if you were previously listed in the database as residing in a neighboring county our database will not generate a recertification notice for you. We will be asking each of our training attendees to verify their mailing addresses and county of residence in an effort to keep our database as accurate as possible. In addition, if you or someone you know attends a training in another county we try to notify the other county as a courtesy, but during this very busy season it is sometimes possible to overlook. As a safeguard please be sure to check your card annually for expiration.

register for spring fever forums

Registration for the Spring Fever Garden Forums is now open and will be done online again this year. Participants can register online to attend at home or at a county Extension office site. The website is www.ag.ndsu.edu/springfever/training-sites-for-2015. Pierce County is excited to be a host site again this year.

All gardeners are welcome and everything is free. The Spring Fever Garden Forums will be held on Monday and Tuesday nights, March 23, 24, 30 and 31, at the Pierce County Courthouse Community Meeting Room from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. CDT. We encourage you to register for the program as this helps our county offices provide handouts and other educational materials for you.
