Congratulate our athletic programs

February 20, 2015
Pierce County Tribune

Congratulations need to be extended to the coaches, student-athletes and parents of the Rugby High School student-athletes for an absolutely amazing winter sports season and the incredible accomplishments of these students, not just in one sport, but all three winter sports.

Under coaches Zachmeier and Jundt, the Rugby High School wrestling program is again thriving. Eight Panther wrestlers have qualified for competition at the State Tournament. As a team, they placed third in the region, behind only Bishop Ryan High School and the perennial contenders, the Aggie wrestlers from Velva. The success of the team is a credit to the heart the kids have developed, as engendered by their parents and coaches and how positively they represent Panther pride at Rugby High School.

In addition, the Lady Panthers, under the coaching of Jennifer Brossart, Danny Schneider and Jeremy Johnston, have forged an absolutely amazing season - suffering only three losses and winning first place at the District 11 tournament in Velva. Next week, they will compete at the Region 6 tournament and will represent District 11 very well. Watching the Lady Panthers play basketball is as close to seeing poetry in motion as one can get. They understand the game and have made the most of the talent they have. Win, lose or draw, there is not a loser among those girls, and that is a credit to their coaches and parents as well.

And, of course, finally, the boys basketball team, under the guidance of coaches Mike Santjer, Mike Heidlebaugh and Brian Olson, has become and continues to be a force to be reckoned with. It's one thing to have talented players, but it's quite another thing to make those talented players into a team that can play together, unselfishly and competitively, night-in and night-out, and their coaches have been able to instill those values into the players in a winning fashion. This boys team will undoubtedly go into the books as one of the best Panther teams to play the game and represent Rugby High School. Again, they are a credit to their parents and their coaches.

So if you, as a supporter of Rugby High School co-curriculars, have the opportunity, make sure you congratulate the student-athletes and their parents and extend a sincere thank you to the coaches for the outstanding work they have done in guiding these kids to the successes they have accomplished. It is extremely rare for a small school, as Rugby High School has become, to have three very successful, winning programs in one sports season. I don't recall this occurring at Rugby High School for many years. However, a word of caution: talented athletes come and go, and future seasons may not be nearly as successful. But, if the future athletes continue to aspire to do their best and continue to learn the positive values instilled in them by their parents and coaches, win, lose or draw they will be winners as well. Congratulations and thanks need to be extended to them as well in the years to come.

Jerry Healy,

Rugby
