Legislative assembly off and running

January 23, 2015
Pierce County Tribune

Well, we are off and running here in Bismarck. As of this writing, the Senate has introduced 262 bills compared to 251 last session at this time. The House has introduced 436 bills as compared to 423 bills. The Senate is on its last week of bill introduction and each Senate member can still introduce up to three bills.

The discussion most everywhere is the falling price of oil. That is of some concern. Many of the legislature's additional appropriations come from the oil tax revenue. We will be looking at another financial revenue forecast in March to hopefully get a better handle on our revenues.

At this time, we are planning carefully to meet our budget requirements. We are cautiously reviewing whether to add employees and even looking at possibly reducing the budget increases proposed by the various agencies.

In past sessions, we either had a little money to work with or some extra money to help fund additional needs. This session, we just aren't quite sure how much money we have. We will tread carefully for the time being. Stay tuned.

Sen. Jerry Klein, R-District 14
