Remembering Legion baseball

October 3, 2014
Pierce County Tribune

Dear Editor,

I played legion baseball in Rugby sometime around 1953 and 54. Sid Grande was our coach the first year and Jerry Meyer the second year. I don't remember many of my teammates, but I know Lee Smultzer, Phil Bush, Marvin Myhre were some. But that is not the reason for this letter. I remember very well the state championship team. I was the coach of the Oakes team that lost to Rugby 2 to 1 in the first game of the tournament.

To this day, I still feel that had we been able to beat Rugby, we would have won state that year. We had an experienced team with solid hitting up and down the lineup and two other very good pitchers. On that evening, we were beat by a better team.

Al Scheet,

Bismarck
