Who says girls can’t play ball?

August 1, 2014

For Joran Jundt, playing baseball doesn't require a second thought.

"It's actually pretty fun because all the girls are always playing tag," Joran said. "I'd rather play baseball, football or basketball."

Joran, 9, is one of three girls in this year's Rugby summer baseball program. It's her third season of baseball and she plays on the blue peewee team opposite red team's Katie Sullivan, 7. Katie said her favorite part of the game is getting hits and rounding bases.

Older sister Gabi Sullivan, 11, played on the midgets red team.

"I wanted something to do this summer and it's interesting and the next closest thing to softball," Gabi said.

Youth coach Garrett Thompson described Joran as natural athlete. Thompson said the girls are more than welcomed.

"I wish we had more. It would be nice to get a softball program," he said.

Fellow coach Mitch Grochow agreed and has enjoyed coaching the elder Sullivan.

"It takes awhile for the boys to warm up, but they wanted to play catch with her at the end, where in the beginning they may have avoided her."
