A record 22 teams turned out for the Good Samaritan Health Services Foundation 16th Annual Charity Golf Classic on June 18 at Rugby Golf Course.

The tournament raised more than $18,000, which is a 23 precent increase from last year's event, according to Linda Kay Duchscher, community relations and development director for Heart of America Medical Center.

The GSHS Foundation mission is to provide financial resources for HAMC and Haaland Estates.

"The sponsorships and community support was amazing and it appeared that all the teams were having a good time," Duchscher said. "After a fundraiser is over and you have time to take a deep breath and reflect on the event. That's when you realize how much support and encouragement you receive from so many in this community."

The tournament drew healthy competition from Rugby and around the state. EAPC Architects Engineers, of Grand Forks, won the first flight with a score of 61. The team included Alan Dostert, Mark Pangquist, James Dukleth and Kelli Flermoen.

"We really enjoy that tournament," Pangquist said. "It's a really fun course and the people are great. It's run really well and we appreciate them for putting it on."

EAPC has done projects for HAMC.

"I think it was luck," Pangquist said. "It was a nice day and we all hit good shots and it just happened to work."

The Rugby Dental team of Mike and Kathy Santjer and Brett and Cherie McAtee took second in the first flight with a 63. Third place in the first flight was the Rugby Eagles team of Craig Wollenberg, Benji Miller, Mitch Grochow and Angie Zietz. They also scored a 63, as count back scoring placed them just behind Rugby Dental.

The top three teams in the second flight all scored 68 (count back), with Envision taking first. The team included Dale Fedje, Jeremy Wolf, Marques Stricker and Sandy Wurgler. Rugby Manufacturing was second with Jeff Duchscher, Ray Salley, Jeff Mayer and Linda Sattler. Merchants Bank was third with Michelle Lake, LaVon Schmaltz, Travis Schmaltz and Wayne Stevenson.
