Crystal Hovland helps set record

Former Rugby High School standouts Crystal and Aubrey Hovland competed at NCAA track and field meets in California on April 18 and 19.

Older sister Crystal, a junior at University of Mary, was part of a record-setting relay April 18 at the Mt. Sac Relays in Walnut, Calif. Crystal ran the opening leg of the 1,600-meter relay and teamed with Melanie Rodriguez, Kathryn Stewart, Cassandra Jones to set the Mary record in 3 minutes, 42.24 seconds. The time was also good enough for an NCAA provisional qualifying mark. Crystal also ran a provisional qualifier in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:01.37 and took 30th out of 57 competitors.

The following day, her time of 1:02.41 seconds in the 400 hurdles earned her 12th place out of 54 competitors from mostly Division 1 schools at the Beach Invitational in Norwalk, Calif. The Mary women had six provisional qualifying marks at the meet, which was hosted by Long Beach State University.

Aubrey Hovland, a freshman at University of North Dakota, was 34th out of 43 competitors in the high jump at the Beach Invitational. Hovland cleared 5 feet, 1 inch. The winner, Kelsey English of University of Colorado, jumped 5-11.25.

Aubrey jumped an inch higher the day before to take 20th out of 36 at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa Pacific University in Azusa, Calif.

April 26 results

Crystal Hovland took fourth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:00.08 at the Al Cassel Relays at University of Jamestown on April 26. She also finished sixth in the 200 (25.99) and 11th in javelin (29.27 meters or 96 feet).
