More snow in Pierce County

By Staff | Apr 18, 2014

The National Weather Service in Bismarck forecasts a mostly sunny day today, with temperatures in the 50s. It is expected to get warmer tomorrow and Monday, with temperatures ranging from 60 to 70 degrees.

But Pierce County area residents woke up Wednesday to a small, white blanket of snow and below freezing temperatures in the morning.

School wasn’t canceled Wednesday, but the track meet that was scheduled for Thursday in Rugby was postponed, partially due to the snow. A make-up date hasn’t been set yet.

Snowstorms in April aren’t an uncommon occurrence in the plains, and it’s especially true with Winter Storm “Zephyr.”

“Zephyr” was expected to drop a foot of snow or more in the Rocky Mountains and in Wyoming earlier this week. Narrow bands were expected to stretch through Nebraska, Wisconsin and Upper Peninsula Michigan.

The cold front “Zephyr” would bring in was also expected to mesh with the warm, humid air from the Gulf of Mexico, creating uplift required for thunderstorms, hail and possible tornadoes in southern states.
