March 28, 2014

This won't come as a surprise to anyone close to the Pierce County Fair. Don Jelsing was recognized as the Rugby Area Chamber of Commerce's Volunteer of the Month for March.

Jelsing has been directly involved or on the Pierce County Fair Board since it started in 1990.

"Not only at the fair, but Jelsing gives 110 percent," said Don Sobolik, another fair volunteer. "His generosity is outpouring."

Don Jelsing is the Rugby Area Chamber of Commerce Volunteer of the Month for March. Jelsing has served on the Pierce County Fair Board since 1990.

Jelsing works full-time driving truck for Lautt's Feed and Rental in Harvey, and owns a sign rental business in Rugby. His schedule doesn't leave tons of room for volunteering, but helping with the fair is a part of him.

"There's just something about the fair that means so much to me in the way of being able to help bring a community and families together," Jelsing said, "to bring happiness not only to the kids' faces, but the adults."

The fair ran from 1991 through 1999, and resumed in 2011. Keeping the event running hasn't always been easy, but volunteers like Jelsing don't want to see another break.

"Throughout the many struggles of the first eight or nine years, it got hectic for awhile, and I questioned myself why do I do this?" he said, "and I saw two kids walking out of the fair grounds smiling and that's why I continue to do it, is to bring some smiles to people's faces and to the people in the community."

Said Sobolik: "From the time I've known him, his involvement has been non-stop. He's been here his whole life in the community."

Jelsing said he simply enjoys giving back and said part of it has to do with accomplishing tasks people didn't believe possible.

"Volunteerism drives me because I'm a firm believer that we all need to look back on our life, every day, every week, every year, and we need to ask ourselves have we done something to make this community, this world a better place to live?"
