Pastor's Corner: Your source of help

February 7, 2014
Nathan Steen - Pastor, Glad Tidings Assembly of God, Rugby , Pierce County Tribune

James Coats penned the words to the old song, "Where Could I Go But To The Lord." The chorus to the song has a repeated, heart-felt statement that says, "Where could I go, oh where could I go, seeking a refuge for my soul, needing a friend, to help me in the end, where could I go but to the Lord." I have found myself singing that chorus many times when sorrow or trouble is knocking at the door to my heart. I have found that Jesus Christ truly is a friend, a Savior, and the Lord God who helps me.

Jesus knows what this world is like. When He walked this earth, He was tempted and tried; He faced sorrow, pain and death. Hebrews 5:7 says, "While Jesus was here on earth, he offered prayers and pleadings, with a loud cry and tears, to the one who could deliver him out of death, and God heard his prayers because of his reverence for God."

Jesus is the example for us in our times of need, and the Bible is filled with other true stories of people who faced overwhelming need in this life, but in looking to the Lord God with surrendering trust, they found help in the Lord.

The Psalms are also filled with reminders of the help we find, only in the Lord. Psalm 121 reads: "I look up to the mountains does my help come from there? My help comes from the Lord, who made the heavens and the earth." Psalm 46:1 says, "God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble." Psalm 48:14 says, "For this is God, Our God forever and ever; He will be our guide even to death." So whatever difficulty or challenging situation you may be facing in life right now, God is calling you to find a refuge and help in Him. We can sing with deep confidence and thanksgiving, "Where Could I Go But To The Lord." Praise The Lord!
