Kuhnhenn Memorial Ride set for Sept. 7

September 7 should prove to be a busy day in Rugby as both The Daryl Kuhnhenn Memorial Ride and Geographical Center Days are likely to draw large crowds.

The ride, which is in its second year, honors Daryl Kuhnhenn, who died in a motorcycle accident just less than two years ago.

The inaugural event was huge, with 300 registered riders and close to 500 attending the free-will supper following the ride.

The ride starts with a parade going down Main Avenue in Rugby at 11 a.m.

Organizer Mandy Kuhnhenn said Dale Niewoehner will have flags at the Merchants Bank Park and there will also be flags at the fairgrounds, the site of Geographical Center Days.

The ride goes from Rugby to Willow City, then south to Towner, Drake and Martin, going through Balta before heading back to Rugby.

The supper to follow at the Eagles is a free-will offering taco bar and Mandy Kuhnhenn said there will also be a free DJ along with a photo booth at the Memorial Hall that evening.

"We're hoping for even more people than last year," she said.

Geographical Center Days returns after the Wind Harvest Festival was held around the same time last year.

Rugby Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Shelley Block said it should be a good day for families to enjoy.

There will be professional kite flyers and music on the fairgrounds and Block said local Relay for Life teams will start their fundraising.

"It's going to be a lot of fun," Block said. "We've got face painting and vendors as well. I just wanted to make it a family-filled day."
