Forgetting the past

McClintock gains personal redemption on summer tour

Jack McClintock's high school golf season left a sour taste in the mouth of the soon-to-be Rugby senior.

But McClintock has found redemption on the summer junior golf tour, playing well in major events in the upper Midwest.

McClintock swept a pair of Minnesota Junior PGA Golf events at the Meadows Golf Course and Village Green in Moorhead, Minn., on July 15 and 16.

McClintock shot identical 2 under 70s in the tournaments, which started to help him forget about the North Dakota High School Tournament, where he didn't play his best golf but still finished in the top 10.

"I think I'm playing some of my best golf, shooting 2 under on both days," McClintock said. "It's kind of making up for it, but it's still kind of a bummer I didn't do well in the high school season. There's still next year."

McClintock's run of summer success started at the PGA Junior Section Qualifier in late June, where he tied for sixth place at the Fargo Country Club.

Following that tournament, McClintock traveled to Sioux Falls, S.D., where he competed in the Big I National Qualifier.

After shooting a 3 over 73 on the first day, McClintock was in 15th place. But he caught fire on the second day, shooting a 2 under 70 on a different course.

"I thought I was out of it after the first day, but I came back and shot 2 under and gave myself a chance," he said.

McClintock finished the tournament in third place, just one stroke away from earning one of the qualifying spots at the national tournament on August 5 at the legendary Country Club of North Carolina in Pinehurst, N.C.

"That would've been a life-changing experience right there," he said.

McClintock will still be busy that day, playing at the season-ending Minnesota Junior PGA Tournament at Rush Creek Golf Course in Minnesota.
