Local and area residents borrowed approximately $135,000 in interest-free Rugby Christmas Bucks earlier this month, local Chamber of Commerce and financial institution officials said last week.

The loans were offered from $300 to $900 and span nine months interest-free. Loans were given to consumers in printed "Rugby Bucks", spendable at participating Rugby Chamber of Commerce stores.

The stores cashed the certificates at their banks and paid five percent for the program.

The idea behind the project was to stimulate Christmas shopping at home. Chamber officials say they feel the effort was worthwhile.

The Benson County Cooperative Credit Union, Rugby; Merchants Bank and First American Bank participated in the interest-free loan program.

The total number of dollars loaned is between $132,000 and $137,000, according to figures from the financial institutions.
