The Rugby School District lost nearly 400 children from its population from 1979 to this year, according to census data collected by the district earlier this summer.

In 1979 there were 1574 children in the school district from birth through age 17. This year the total is down to 1200 children. The total in 1981 was 1457; there were 1413 children in those age groups in 1983, and the total from 1985 was 1337.

Of the 1200 children in the district this year, 426 are boys and 417 are girls in the 6-17 age group, a total of 843, according to this year's census figures.

The numbers show declines in population and birthrates over the years. There are only 30 children listed as being under the age of one in this year's census. That figure is about half of past year census figures, but does not count births for the months of June, July and August.

The number of children in every age group is down from 1985.
