The Christmas season is beginning in our community, and what better way to kick it off than with a holiday concert by area musicians?

Village Arts will present their 11th annual Christmas Concert Sunday, December 5, at 3 p.m. in the Tilman Hovland Auditorium at Rugby High School.

Entitled "Christmas Harmony", the concert will feature music by the Heartland Civic Orchestra, the Heartland Civic Choir and the Heart Strings.

Tilman Hovland will direct the full orchestra in several holiday favorites including "Parade of the Wooden Soldiers", "Once in Royal David's City", and "The Christmas Waltz".

The choir will sing "Tidings of Joy", "Come and See the Babe", "Sing a Song of Merry Christmas", and will join with the orchestra for a medley of traditional carols. The choir is directed by Daryl Wissink and accompanied by Cathy Wissink.

Deb Jenkins directs the youth group, Heart Strings, who will play "Jingle Bell Rock" and "Sahara Crossing". They will be accompanied by string players from the orchestra in "Feed the Birds" from the movie "Mary Poppins". As a stand-alone group, the orchestra string players will perform a few numbers including "Traditions of Christmas" and "Dance from the Red Poppy".

Tickets will be sold at the door, and choir and orchestra members, along with the directors, are hoping for a large audience to start the Christmas season with a musical bang.

"It will be a good concert," said Hovland. "It always is."
