Gladys Pederson turns 100 years old and is celebrating with family and friends on Saturday, Oct. 30.

Born at home in Barton on Nov. 5, 2010, she was the oldest of 13 children, seven girls and six boys. She has four younger sisters still living, three in Washington state and one in Devils Lake. Her brothers are all gone.

Since she was the oldest, she helped her dad with farm work until she completed eighth grade. Gladys drove a team of horses at an early age.

After her education, she worked as a childcare provider and helped her dad on the farm. She married Ed Pederson and they were married for 65 years until he died. They raised three children, Alvin (now deceased), Marie Sattler, and Rodney. Gladys has eight grandchildren, twenty-two great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

The best experience in her whole life was being married to Ed and raising her children. She was active in Ladies Aid at Knox Lutheran Church, taught Sunday School, served as 4-H leader, was an active member in the American Legion Auxiliary, and was involved with Farmers Union.

She thinks the electric washing machine was the greatest invention during her lifetime because she no longer had to carry water to do the laundry, according to her daughter.

She loved her parents Dagfin and Petra Olson and after her marriage to Ed, Gladys would send money home to them to help with purchases such as new tires for their car.

She worked hard on the farm and tells how she was putting up hay all day and then gave birth to her daughter that same night at home.

Gladys lives at the Haaland Home now where she is involved in making crafts, playing cards, attending chapel and the Red Hatters.

Gladys isn't the oldest member of her family yet, she had an uncle who lived to be 102 and she has a cousin in Norway that is still living at 102.

She is looking forward to visiting with family friends at her birthday party.
