Shana Volk covers the floor

October 8, 2010
By Terri Kelly Barta

Shana Volk has earned 14 digs, 21 aces, and 21 kills so far this season for her team TGU (Towner-Granville-Upham).

The Granville High School senior enjoys the mental game of volleyball as well as getting her aggression out by hitting a ball.

"It's really fun," said Volk who has been playing volleyball since she was in the fourth grade.

She plays outside hitter and middle hitter on her team.

"Shana's really good at covering the floor," said coach Peggy Eidmann.

A personal goal Volk has for this season is to "Immensely improve my game. I've never been a front line hitter." She is diligently trying to change that. "Although short, I can hit," she laughed.

"When you need her to step up to the net she really tries," said the coach.

She believes one of her strengths as a player and senior leader is to "get everyone pumped up and keep everyone alive on the court."

Coverage is another aspect of the game that the team is working on.

"We have a lot of new girls on the team," explained Volk. "Every day the seniors are working with the younger girls to learn to pick their spots.

"They are quick to learn," she added.

Volk said the strength of their team is that they are a family. "We get along so well."

She believes that getting along is a key to team- work and being able to anticipate what other players are going to do so you can position yourself to help.

Like most sports teams, TGU set a goal at the beginning of the season to make it to regionals and to show what TGU really has to offer. They have struggled and have only won one match this season, but they continue to give the sport their all.

On Thursday, October 7, TGU was scheduled to play Sawyer, a match that Volk thinks will be their greatest challenge.

"We have struggled with them before," said Volk. "I know if we pull together and listen to each other we can do it."

"Rolette will be a tough match, too, but we can play to their ability and we can defeat them," said Volk with enthusiasm.

Shana is the daughter of Kevin Volk, Rugby and Tina Lenton, Granville.
