Rugby routs Midway-M

September 24, 2010
Tribune Staff Reports

It's been a long season so far for Midway-Minto, and Rugby senior Eric Kuntz's performance on Sept. 17 only added to the frustration for the winless Mustangs.

The game could be defined on two back-to-back plays.

With M-M driving for a score late in the second quarter, Kuntz made a spectacular interception in the corner of the end zone, grabbing the ball with one hand as he fell backward. Then, Kuntz took the next play 80 yards untouched for a score to give the Panthers a 27-7 advantage.

"(Those plays) really changed the game,' said Rugby coach Scott Grochow.

Rugby cruised from there, rolling to a 52-7 Homecoming win on a chilly night to improve to 2-1 in Region 2 and 2-2 overall.

"After the Cavalier game we really stressed getting back to do the little things right,' Grochow said.

Rugby's offensive line dominated and allowed Kuntz and the other running backs to get into the secondary before they were met by a defender. Kuntz would finish with 298 yards rushing and two scores. Senior fullback Jason Goetz also ran for a pair of scores. Freshman Nigel Hageness and sophomore Kyle Lovcik also ran in scores.

The Panther offensive starters played the opening series of the third quarter and the rest of the half belonged to reserves.

"I was pleased with how our younger players stepped in and performed well,' Grochow said. "Our JV offense scored twice."

Rugby led 13-0 before Midway-Minto would get on the board on Kevin Tibert's 95-yard kick off return. Jason Goetz's one-yard score would regain a two-score lead for the Panthers before the Mustangs put together its best offensive drive of the game, reaching the Panther seven-yard line.

Unfortunately, it ended with Kuntz's interception. Panther quarterback Riley Olsen had a quiet night, but did hook up on a 5-yard slant pass in the end zone with senior Levi Schaan in the second quarter.

Rugby's defensive technically posted a shutout as the Mustangs lone score came on special teams. Rugby held the Mustangs to just 165 yards of total offense.

The 52 points was the most the Panthers have put up since a 54-21 win at Central Cass in 2006.

The loss was the Mustangs 15th straight, dating back to 2008.
